"Talking with your teacher"

A reader asked me if I think talking to teachers about adoption is a good idea. I think that if you feel you want your teachers to know that you are adopted, and it is important to you that they know, you should talk to them. I would suggest you talk to your teachers and your parents about your feelings. Maybe it would be a good idea to have a meeting with your parents and your teachers together. If you do not feel comfortable involving your parents, you can always talk to a school guidance counselor. Don’t feel nervous about going to see a school guidance counselor because they can be very helpful in these types of situations. Teachers are a great resource to go to also. Do not be afraid to talk to your teachers if you want to. If you don’t want to talk to your teachers, that is okay as well. I would suggest, however, letting your parents know how you are feeling so they can help you. Remember, your parents are the people that will always be there for you no matter what.

It is important to have a strong relationship with your parents, teachers, and classmates so that you have people you can confide in. I know that sometimes it can be difficult to complete some of your homework assignments that involve family structures, such as creating a family tree, or bringing in baby pictures or clothes from when you were born. It is also challenging to trace your family history to find out more about your ancestors. You may feel different from the rest of your friends. This could be something else you want to talk to your teachers about. Just click here to go to a whole section on the Adoption Clubhouse that can help you with homework assignments.

Being adopted is a wonderful thing and something that can certainly be shared with those people in your life that are important to you. On the other hand, your life is your personal business and the details of it do not have to be shared with anyone that you do not feel comfortable with. I hope this helps you decide when and with whom you want to discuss the issue of adoption. If any readers have thoughts about this topic please forward them to “Hey Rachel”. Questions about adoption are really important to me so please keep them coming and I will do my best to answer them. Remember, this site is for you! I look forward to hearing from all of you.
